Poynton Live Gig Review
Tipitina at Poynton Legion
Describing their genre as 'jazz/blues with a funky edge', Leyland-based combo 'Tipitina' brought the house down at Poynton Legion. This was all the more interesting for your reviewer because I’m not really a fan of blues in general. But it just goes to show that if you’re open-minded about it, there’s some brilliant music being played in our little community.
Demonstrating musical virtuosity and creative interpretation that never got in the way of soulful delivery, 'Tipitina' gave a truly entertaining experience to the packed house. From a whisper to a full crescendo they were always right on the nerve – the audience loved it and rightly so.
Although the fingerprint of the band is probably their remarkable New Orleans piano style, it would be impossible to single out any one in particular because they played as a team not individuals. With exceptional soloing, infectious percussion, bluesy vocals and five-part harmonies it was truly awesome!
So come out next time and try something different. You might find as I did that your boat will be truly floated! Justin Randall on piano, Debbie Jones on lead vocals, Andrew Jones on guitar, Ollie Collins on bass and Brian Hargreaves on drums, I salute you all. Here’s to the next time!
